Leaking Gestures: An Interview with Dafna Maimon

This article is part of our feature topic Abjection. Sun pours into Dafna Maimon’s Kreuzberg studio on a spring day in March, as we greet each other and prepare for our conversation about the role of the abject in her practice, which encompasses a wide range of media, including painting, video, installation and performance. Just as I’m about to sit down on a wooden chair at her desk, she asks…

Lively and Impermanent: Peter Hujar / Liz Deschenes at Gropius Bau

The skeletons of collapsing buildings; shifting licks of light on water; insubmissive deathbed portraiture. Wandering through ‘Persistence of Vision’ at Gropius Bau, I feel fizzy. Peter Hujar’s photography, mostly taken in 1970s and 80s New York, is occupied with the intensity of impermanence. It seeks out a startling kind of liveliness, the sort that comes when subjects are at their most mutable.

Sustained Gestures: An Interview with Martina Yordanova

This year’s Bulgarian Pavilion, opening at the 61st Venice Biennale of Art next month, is framed as the headquarters of a fictional research lab, set in a future political landscape. In ‘The Federation of Minor Practices’—which will feature films and a collaborative work by four Bulgarian artists (Veneta Androva, Gery Georgieva, Maria Nalbantova and Rayna Teneva)—care becomes the foundation for a…

Conflicting Ambitions: Thailand Biennale Phuket

To be included in the Thailand Biennale is to have “made it” as an artist, or to be on the verge of doing so, propelled by the biennial’s implicit seal of approval. That was, at least, how it was described during my visit: as Southeast Asia’s equivalent of the Venice Biennale. In Phuket, the fourth edition certainly performs the ambition of matching its European North Star in scale…

Portholes Into A World: An Interview with Leila Hekmat

From the back of a rehearsal studio a couple weeks before ‘Roses Rising – The Dinner’ premieres at HAU, I watch as one of Leila Hekmat’s cast languishes on a chaise longue centred on the studio’s impromptu stage. Eyes glazed, gazing vacantly at the ceiling, she philosophizes: “who am I?” The scene feels full of both melodrama and parody, a tone that runs through Hekmat’s recent work.

What We Carry: ‘Vessel & Voyager’ at Akademie der Künste

Upstairs at Akademie der Künste’s Hanseatenweg location, the exhibition space holds the works of 25 artists, each offering a unique and intimate look into creation in times of crises. Curated by Clara Herrmann and…
